Driving Safely at Night

Auto accidents will cause your car insurance premiums to increase. Unfortunately, driving is a dangerous thing and accidents occur all the time. It always pays to be safe. You want to take as many safety precautions as possible to protect yourself and your vehicle. Driving at night further increases the chances of getting in an accident. In fact, it is the most dangerous time to drive. It makes it even more important to drive as safely as possible. So, here are some tips for driving at night:

  • Slow Down & Use Signals: At night, you will have limited visibility and less reaction time. You should slow down to allow yourself more time to react and compensate for the lack of visibility. It is also paramount that you use your turn signals because other drivers will not be able to react as efficiently and effectively as they can in the daylight.

  • Use Your High Beams: As we mentioned before, your visibility will be reduced at night. Your high beams will give you more visibility to see further down the road. However, you should not have them on when you have oncoming traffic nearby.

  • Clean Your Windshield: Being able to see the road as clearly as possible is always important, especially at night. A dirty windshield limits your visibility and can prevent you from seeing road hazards. Regularly clean your windshield to eliminate streaks that can produce blinding streaks and dirt and debris that can make it difficult to see.

  • Look Away From Oncoming Lights: Headlights of other vehicles can be blinding, making it difficult to see. It can even leave you with lingering vision issues that last a few seconds. In a vehicle, you can travel hundreds of feet in a few seconds. So, look away when other headlights are too bright.

  • Minimize Lights in Car: The more lights that you have in the car, the more difficult it will be to see outside. Turn off any extra lights you may have. Keep the instrument cluster lights on though. Change your GPS, phone, and infotainment screen into night mode.
